Your Name, Degrees Licenses: Shannon Garrett, BS, RN, CHLC

BS: Human Development

CHLC: Certified Holistic Lifestyle, Wellness, & Nutrition Coach

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I am a registered nurse and certified holistic lifestyle coach. Becoming an RN was my second career in life, and holistic coaching is my 3rd career. I work with women who struggle with the complexities of living with autoimmune or other chronic health issues.

Prior to becoming a nurse, I was an orthotist/prosthetist, and then started my own orthopedic patient care facility in Kentucky (Orthopaedic Services of Paducah, Inc. "OSP'). I was the CEO, compliance officer, and managed marketing functions for the business. I had this company for 18 years and then sold it to a large corporate entity in Exton, Pa (physiotherapy & rehab services).

I live with my husband and our two toy poodles "Willy" & "Alfred" in Nashville, Tennessee.

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? I love to care for people and help them achieve a life of health & wellbeing on all levels: emotional, spiritual, and physical.

What is your experience and background in Nursing? I worked as a cardiac nurse at the premier cardiac hospital of the South: St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville. I also have experience In Med/Surg Nursing Including Oncology, Pulmonary, Orthopedic, and Neuro.

Would you recommend Nursing as a career? Yes, but it depends on the persons rationale for wanting to become a nurse. Bedside nursing isn't for the weak and I've seen many young people go into it for the wrong reasons only to fail.

Your Business Name: Shannon Garrett Wellness

Business Organization? Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC or Corporation (C or S)? I have applied for and am pending corporate status.

Why did you choose this type of organization? The laws of Tennessee and my accountant influenced my decision for incorporating and the structure.

Please describe in detail your business/services you provide: I provide holistic health, wellness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching for women who struggle with the many complexities of living with autoimmune or other chronic health Issues. I have a 12 week program I work them through to help them reach their goals and I provide a NANDA wellness care plan for them. I personally have three autoimmune issues And know what these women go through. Medication nor diet are stand-alone treatments. Lifestyle issues are an integral part of healing and I help them work through challenges. Most of my business comes from physicians, pharmacists, a radio show of which I am a regularly featured guest, and word-of-mouth.

What made you decide to start your own business? Autonomy to help others in a non clinical setting in an effort to hopefully empower them in such a way that they might be able to avoid hospitalization or chronic health Issues. I have been an entreprenuer all of my life and my nursing degree and license allow me to practice in the capacity I have always wanted to: to help others holistically to reach their lifestyle and wellness goals. In addition, I am a relationship type of person and appreciate long term interactions/communication with clients.

How many times have you changed employers in your career? Twice

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Managing and Understanding Priorities, Outcome Oriented, Self-Disclipine, Goal-Setting, People Skills, Structured Thinking.

What exactly is a nurse entrepreneur in your own words? A risk taker, a nurse who sees beyond the typical clinical setting and realizes the possibilities of what he or she can become to serve others and still be a nurse.

Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? No, not in the clinical setting however, I am returning to a very part-time position in November to work with an integrative doctor who is relocating and establishing a practice in Nashville.

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: Nurse-Patient Ratios, Nurse-Bullying, Working Hours, Nurse Health, Reimbursement, Nursing Unit Quota Expectations, Nurse Training, And The allowance of patient care techs becoming a "RN" with very little actual training or education.

How do you feel the coming nursing shortage (as babyboomers enter the healthcare system, and nurses retire in droves) will affect patient care? I fear it will have a negative impact on those babyboomer's who are of ill health

Other areas of interest and expertise: Gardening (Flowers, Herbs, & Hydrangeas), Bicycling, Yoga, Travel, Cooking, Interior Design, Art, and Spending Time In Nature. I Love Hanging Out With My Husband And Our Two Senior Toy Poodles, "Willy" & "Alfred" At Home
