There have been so many challenges from first being laid off and thrown out there to having the roof cave in on one of my wellness centers. When the male contractor did not like having to deal with a woman to having male partners threatened by a strong woman to having people not value "energy methods" because it was new and different to jealousy and competition from people close to me to my own self doubt at times as I wondered what am I doing? Then I would remember my business plan and reflect on my values, mission and my true purpose and remember that I am doing this to serve so to expect it to be easy is simply unrealistic. Once I embraced the challenges, it was almost like a game - almost!

I'll mention a big one but there are many challenges that face a business owner however the rewards outweigh them. First is isolation. You are used to working with nurses and nurses are fun to be around, I experienced a lot of support and I still miss the laughter from being around my colleagues day in and out. As a business owner you have to make sure you are networking. That's why I love the NNBA, I am talking with nurses from all over every week.
Michelle DeLizio Podlesni, RN, CEO Bloom Service Group, Inc. and President of the National Nurses in Business Association:"As president of the NNBA my focus will be on creating additional opportunities for members to learn and develop business skills to accelerate and maximize their success. Typical nursing education does not incorporate business-NNBA bridges that gap! We will continue to expand the association through education, coaching programs, national networking, mentoring and conferences." ******************************************************

Embracing technology and social media (need I say more?) Eileen Spillane, RN, MA, NP, The Balanced Nurse:"I help nurses reduce stress and bring balance into their lives through teaching classes, coaching, or presenting at conferences. I have worked individually with nurses via phone, Skype or in-person for those living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Issues addressed have been career transitions, workplace toxicity, burnout, stress management and issues with self-judgment. Often I work with nurses for three to six month time frames to support them to identify the road blocks preventing them from reaching their potential. Classes I have taught have provided nurses with continuing education credit include Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Striking a Balance With Stress in Nursing, Breaking the Cycle of Work Place Toxicity, and Creating and Sustaining a Satisfying Career in Nursing. I have presented as a Closing Keynote Speaker with Restore, Rejuvenate and Renew Your Energy: Bringing Balance Into Our Workday with Mindfulness and Self-Compassion.
I tailored a 4 hour workshop for Stanford University Bone Marrow Transplant Nurses called Finding The Balance in The Waves of Caregiving." ****************************************************** Can you describe some challenges you had to overcome in starting your business?
