Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses How many times have you changed employers in your career? Oh gosh, many. I started as a clinical nurse on a cardiac step down unit, then left after 5 years for a job in home care, then transferred to a managed care company. I missed the clinical environment and went back as a unit manager, then took a step down and became a clinician on a neuro trauma step down unit as I finished my masters degree. From there I became an advanced practice nurse, then went to a corporate executive position as the Director of Academic Service Partnerships. After 3 years being responsible for the professional development of 10,000 nurses, I left to start my own business. What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business?: Have been an educator for many years and found myself in front of audiences - students and at national nursing conferences. The positive feedback the nurses in my audience gave me was overwhelming. While I was speaking I was in my "zone" where time stood still. I loved knowing that I was helping nurses learn and grow. I knew other nurses who launched a speaking business and were successful, so I thought, why not me? I took a leap of faith, quit a really good job and started RTConnections. What exactly is a nurse entrepreneur in your own words? A nurse entrepreneur is someone who doesn't stay locked in to the traditional careers in nursing. Someone who is a risk taker and isn't afraid to try something new. Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? Yes. I currently work casual on a neuro-trauma step down unit. Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: I think the most pressing concerns with the nursing profession is with our ability to articulate our value in this challenging and complex health care environment. Nurses need to be educated, articulate and lead health care reform efforts because that what our public wants. They want nurses to influence the upcoming changes in health care. Other areas of interest and expertise (Andrew's into photography, loves to travel): I love to travel, spend time with friends and family; I love to read and spend time on the beach.
