December, 2011 What Attracted You ToThe Field of Nursing? I was a Certified Swedish Massage Practitioner and CertifiedKripalu Yoga Instructor during my 20’s after leaving behind my studies inseveral schools of fine art. After some years in the holistic health field, Ifound that I wanted to be able to impact people’s health from the “inside” ofthe system rather than just the “outside”. I had three aunts who were nurses---one who was a personalnurse to General Patton during World War II---and their stories of nursing andits importance made an impression on me from a very early age. I always perceived nursing as a humble and importantprofession, and joining the ranks of nurses seemed like a perfect “fit” for mevis-à-vis fulfilling my goal of bringing improved health to as many people aspossible over the course of my career. The holistic nursing model was a goodmatch with my previous training in holistic health, and my ongoing goal hasalways been to bring that holism back to the forefront of nursing practice. What is your experience and background in Nursing? My experience and background in nursing includes Public Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Case Management, Care Management, consulting, Hospice Nursing, Home Health Nursing, Private Duty Nursing, and nursing education (as lecturing professor). I also write and blog professionally about nursing and health care. Would you recommend Nursing as a career? I would highly recommend nursing for those individuals who wish to serve their communities through an honorable career path that bringshealth and well-being to millions every day. Nursing is a flexible career that offers many opportunities for multifaceted experience, personal and professional fulfillment and satisfaction, and opportunities for career advancement and entrepreneurship. How did you hearabout the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Through Anna Morrison of icoachnurses.com The year you were first licensed as a nurse? 1996 What school(s) ofnursing did you attend? Greenfield Community College, Greenfield, MA University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Amherst, MA Professional organizations you have belonged to (now or in the past, please spell out the full name): What made you decideto start your own business? I decided to start my own business in order to bring my many gifts and insights to nurses in search of opportunities to improve their health, improve their work-life balance, increase their personal and professional satisfaction, and live happier and more satisfying lives. I believe that nurses need to learn how to take better care of themselves so that they can provide the best care possible. My coaching practice focuses on nurses taking control of their own lives, health, and career path. The ripple effectof this type of proactive personal empowerment by nurses is enormous, since nurses touch the lives of so many individuals and communities. My own coaching business/practice seemed like the most intelligent way to accomplish thesegoals. How many times haveyou changed employers in your career? I have had approximately 11 employers in my 15 years as aRegistered Nurse. Some of those positions were part-time and held simultaneously. What specificqualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate abusiness? Nurses who wish to operate their own business need to be independent, autonomous, collaborative, savvy, flexible, curious, technologically and financially astute, willing to network, and willing to self-promote. Do you currentlypractice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I currently practice in the home care setting for severalagencies in northern New Mexico. Your most pressingconcerns with the profession and healthcare: My most pressing concerns about the profession are thecontinuing nursing shortage, the shortage of nursing professors, nursingburnout, the erroneous portrayal of nurses by the media, poor morale amongnurses, and a culture within the nursing profession that needs to change, growand expand to include new ideas and approaches. Nursing is also a professionthat does necessarily always support and mentor its newest members like itshould. My most pressing concerns about healthcare are the continuedinfluence of insurance companies on medical decision-making, the number ofuninsured and underinsured Americans, the lack of movement towards single-payerhealth care in the US, and the inordinate power wielded by organizations likethe AMA. How do you feel thecoming nursing shortage (as baby boomers enter the healthcare system, andnurses retire in droves) will affect patient care? I feel patient care could suffer due to increasednurse-patient ratios, poor morale, and decreased quality of health outcomes. Asthe population ages, the system needs to change and be more flexible to meetthe demand without compromising quality. Other areas ofinterest and expertise: I am a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, a professionalwriter, an award-winning blogger, and a Certified Professional Coach. I enjoyanimals, nature, hiking, traveling, reading, music and art.
