BusinessOrganization? Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC or Corporation (C or S)? Currently a sole proprietorship, soon to form LLC in State of NM as a partnership with my wife, who is a Life Coach
Why did you choose this type of organization? Sole proprietorship was the easiest thing to do out of the gate, but an LLC is the best way to go for tax purposes, as well as to have some modicum of protection for my personal assets.
Please describe in detail your business/services you provide: Nurse Keith Coaching provides professional coaching services for nurses and nursing students. My services include health and wellness coaching, work-life balance, burnout prevention, burnout recovery, career coaching, and life coaching. During the course of 2014, I became a Board Certified Nurse Coach (NC-BC) under the auspices of the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation. My coaching services now also include "soulful social media coaching" and coaching in authentic networking skills, including the optimal way to maximize your use of Linked In.
I also offer custom Santa Fe-based coaching retreats for nurses and healthcare professionals who want to have a vacation AND do some coaching with me in my beautiful new office facing the Santa Fe Mountains.

What Attracted You ToThe Field of Nursing? I was a Certified Swedish Massage Practitioner and CertifiedKripalu Yoga Instructor during my 20’s after leaving behind my studies in several schools of fine art. After some years in the holistic health field, I found that I wanted to be able to impact people’s health from the "inside" of the system rather than just the "outside."
I had three aunts who were nurses---one who was a personal nurse to General Patton during World War II---and their stories of nursing and its importance made an impression on me from a very early age.
I always perceived nursing as a humble and important profession, and joining the ranks of nurses seemed like a perfect "fit" for me vis-à-vis fulfilling my goal of bringing improved health to as many people as possible over the course of my career. The holistic nursing model was a good match with my previous training in holistic health, and my ongoing goal has always been to bring that holism back to the forefront of nursing practice.
What is your experience and background in Nursing? My experience and background in nursing includes Public Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Case Management, Care Management, consulting, Hospice Nursing, Home Health Nursing, Private Duty Nursing, and Nursing Education (as lecturing professor). I also write and blog professionally about nursing and health care.
Would you recommend Nursing as a career? I would highly recommend nursing for those individuals who wish to serve their communities through an honorable career path that brings health and well-being to millions every day. Nursing is a flexible career that offers many opportunities for multifaceted experience, personal and professional fulfillment and satisfaction, and opportunities for career advancement and entrepreneurship.
How did you hearabout the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Through Anna Morrison of icoachnurses.com
The year you were first licensed as a nurse? 1996
What school(s) of nursing did you attend?
Greenfield Community College, Greenfield, MA
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Amherst, MA
What made you decideto start your own business? I decided to start my own business in order to bring my many gifts and insights to nurses in search of opportunities to improve their health, improve their work-life balance, increase their personal and professional satisfaction, and live happier and more satisfying lives. I believe that nurses need to learn how to take better care of themselves so that they can provide the best care possible. My coaching practice focuses on nurses taking control of their own lives, health, and career path. The ripple effect of this type of proactive personal empowerment by nurses is enormous, since nurses touch the lives of so many individuals and communities. My own coaching business/practice seemed like the most intelligent way to accomplish these goals.
How many times haveyou changed employers in your career? I have had approximately 11 employers in my 15 years as a Registered Nurse. Some of those positions were part-time and held simultaneously.
What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Nurses who wish to operate their own business need to be independent, autonomous, collaborative, savvy, flexible, curious, technologically and financially astute, willing to network, and willing to self-promote.
Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I currently practice in the home care setting for several agencies in northern New Mexico.
Your most pressingconcerns with the profession and healthcare: My most pressing concerns about the profession are the continuing nursing shortage, the shortage of nursing professors, nursing burnout, the erroneous portrayal of nurses by the media, poor morale among nurses, and a culture within the nursing profession that needs to change, grow and expand to include new ideas and approaches. Nursing is also a profession that does necessarily always support and mentor its newest members like it should.
My most pressing concerns about healthcare are the continued influence of insurance companies on medical decision-making, the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans, the lack of movement towards single-payer health care in the US, and the inordinate power wielded by organizations likethe AMA.
How do you feel thecoming nursing shortage (as baby boomers enter the healthcare system, and nurses retire in droves) will affect patient care?
I feel patient care could suffer due to increased nurse-patient ratios, poor morale, and decreased quality of health outcomes. As the population ages, the system needs to change and be more flexible to meet the demand without compromising quality.
Other areas ofinterest and expertise: I am a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, a professional writer, an award-winning blogger, and a Certified Professional Coach. I enjoy animals, nature, hiking, traveling, reading, music and art.
