January 2010 What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? I was 17 and that was so long ago—I am not sure I remember! I have always loved everything medical—it seemed a natural way to pursue the medical field. In those days women were nurses—and we wore caps and all white! What is your experience and background in Nursing? Capra Dalton R.N. Founder and CEO of Pedagogy Inc. has more than 24 years’ experience in infusion therapy and the instruction of licensed nurses in infusion therapy continuing education. Her experience comes from multiple infusion settings: acute care, ambulatory infusion centers, home infusion, Long Term Care continuing education provider and Quality Assurance Consultant in Long Term Care. She received her nursing education from Lamar University, Texas and graduated in 1986. Would you recommend Nursing as a career? Hmmmm, I am not so sure. How did you hear about the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Linked In The year were you first licensed as a nurse? 1986 Professional organizations you have belonged to: Infusion Nurses Society, Texas Healthcare Association, National Association of Practical Nurse Education and Services, Council of Practical Nurse Educators. What made you decide to start your own business? I was teaching traditional classroom I.V. Education—and saw the many obstacles of this traditional type of education: getting the nurses to the course, expense, travel, schedule difficulties, different learning styles and paces. It occurred to me that there had to be a better way to provide these nurses the didactic portion of I.V. education in a capacity that met THEIR needs. My husband (and CTO) has over 28 years of experience in software and database architecture, and website management. So we dreamed up Pedagogy-which means “the art and science of teaching”—and we were off! It is a great misconception that all there is to I.V. education is how to insert a catheter—take one of our courses and you will soon realize—there is a lot of knowledge a nurse must have to deliver infusion therapy to their patients safely. How many times have you changed employers in your career? 7 What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? I have valuable insights (from experience) in the field of nursing. Education is a passion—I love to teach—and learn. Running a business takes a high degree of self-motivation, organization and multi-tasking abilities—all of which I think I possess. Also the ability to think outside the box—just because something has always been done a certain way—doesn’t mean it cannot be improved upon or changed for the better. Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I am writing continuing education courses for Pedagogy Inc. Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: I am not a believer in the way medicine is practiced in this country—pills and drugs do not make healthy people. We focus far too much on the symptoms—and not the underlying issues. How do you feel the coming nursing shortage (as baby boomers enter the healthcare system, and nurses retire in droves) will affect patient care? I think we will see an increased amount of non-nursing caregivers. See also:
