Contact person(s): Beth Boynton Phone number: 207-752-0826 In what date (month/year) did you start your business? 09/2003 What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? Well in all honesty, I was in my late 20s when I went to nursing school. I had been interested in a variety of medical professions and already had a BS in Biochemistry. A friend of mine's mother, an RN talked with me at length about what she loved about nursing, the practical lure of lots of job opportunities, and my own interest combined led me to applying to an ADN program. I was kind of drifting with teaching high school science and working on hazardous waste field projects and looking for lab jobs that I didn't really want. I got in and from the very first class realized that the nursing profession was way more challenging and exciting than I realized. It is funny that I minored in "Theatre and Communication" with my biochem degree and now have come to this exciting work in Medical Improv. It's all related in sometimes mysterious ways! Thanks for asking. What is your experience and background in Nursing? I believe my expertise in communication, emotional intelligence and orgaizational behavior is essential for nurses to provide safe care and to experience healthy and rewarding careers. How many times have you changed employers in your career? Roughly 6 What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Very smart, industrious, compassionate and innovative. Also, our skill set in health & wellness offers many opportunities to meet individual, social and business needs. What exactly is a nurse entrepreneur? Someone who creates a new way of working as a nurse. Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I work with Alheimer's patients in a LTCF as a per diem staff RN. (My communication and group dynamics skills come in handy and related skills and relationships in this population are fascinating to me.) Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: 1. Nurses deserve healthy work environments and workloads. 2. Respectful communication among nurses and other HCPS will help build positive workplaces and work relationships. 3. This is key for safe, cost-effective, timely, equitable, compassionate care and long-term careers. How do you feel the coming nursing shortage (as baby boomer enter the healthcare system, and nurses retire in droves) will affect patient care? I don't think about it! Other areas of interest and expertise: I love theatre improvisation and utilize many activities to build emotional intelligence. ZUMBA
