May, 2011 What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? How I actually got into nursing is a funny story that my mom likes to remind me of all of the time. My senior year of college I was moving into an apartment with two nursing majors. One of them even had a nurse professor at our school for a mother! So needless to say as we were unpacking our stuff and I was standing there telling them I “didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up” they all put their heads together, the four of them (my two roommates to be, my mother, and her mother the nursing professor) and decided I apply to the accelerated nursing program at my college. So for me, it wasn’t so much a “choice” but I am grateful I listened to their guidance every day of my life! What is your experience and background in Nursing? My experience has been in psychiatry, health promotion and prevention, community wellness, and now research. However, I work with nurses who want to enhance their health and overall well-being. I don’t consult with any patient populations. Would you recommend Nursing as a career? Yes How did you hear about the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Keith and Kevin from RN.FM Radio The year were you first licensed as a nurse? 2005 Professional organizations you have belonged to (now or in the past, please spell out the full name): Past: American Psychiatric Nurse Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Maryland Nurse Association, and American Nurse Association. Current: American Holistic Nurse Association What made you decide to start your own business? View previous responses: http://www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/why/ I always knew I wanted to own my own “something” I just never knew what that something was. So I went to school for my master’s in business and nursing- just in case that idea came to me! When I left my inpatient role to work at a wellness center, coordinating a physician referred exercise program, I went through a health and wellness coaching program- my first one of two. When I was done the club wanted me to coach their clients there. But I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do- I wanted to coach my own clients in my own business. That “something” had turned into a reality. I am quite independent, motivated, hard-working, committed, and dedicated. I want to make a difference and have an impact on the nursing profession. I want to help our profession rise to a new level. That being said my “coaching” business has turned into so much more- I realized that nurses needed me in many different capacities. So I have turned to speaking, writing, radio show hosting, and many other modalities to be able to help nurses where they are at. I love being a business owner and I wouldn’t have it any other way! How many times have you changed employers in your career? I’ve worked at the same hospital my entire career. However, I took a break to go work at the health and wellness center. I now work at both- part-time, while running my business. So maybe “changed” has been none but I have worked in a variety of roles! That’s one of the things I absolutely love about nursing- there are options all over the place for us!! What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? View previous responses: http://www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/qualities Nurses have a beautiful blend of art, skill, passion, and knowledge. We are organized and hard-working. We are committed to and believe in our work. When a nurse has a job to do- she/he does it with everything she/he’s got! Not only do we have the dedication to our work, but we have vigorous and intense training, extensive educational programs, and hands-on experience like no other profession. We love working with people and for people so naturally owning our own businesses is fun and easy. The amount of knowledge and resources we can bring to any target market is immeasurable- and it totally helps to be the most trusted profession year after year! Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? Yes, as a clinical nurse research fellow part-time in the department of nursing administration at my hospital. Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: View previous responses: http://www.nursefriendly.com/concerns/ Nurses need to start putting themselves first. The only way any shifts will come within our profession and the healthcare system overall is when nursing is a healthier role- model. Nurses must love, value, and respect themselves. Once they really, truly do that- they will allow themselves to take the time it takes to be well. I hear nurses saying “I don’t have time for my health. I don’t have time for me…” Well, yes. When we put everyone else above us- patients, clients, families, friends, neighbors, communities, etc. - yes we don’t have time for ourselves. But when we love ourselves more we find and make time for us. Then and only then will we welcome health and well-being into our busy lives. When we are healthy- our patients can enjoy healthier lives. Healthier patients- healthier nation. It is all very related, but we’ve got to start putting our own health and well-being needs first! Other areas of interest and expertise: I am a Reiki Master and practice daily on myself. I love speaking to and writing about Reiki. I am excited to teach other nurses the beautiful balancing, healing benefits of this wonderful modality. I love to practice Yoga and meditation. I enjoy cooking. I love being outside and the sun is one of my best friends. I love the beach and taking long walks with my two dogs! I love traveling to my beach town of Cape May, NJ and I just love having fun. I love music and I enjoy dancing!! How are you hoping a listing in this website will help you (so we can focus on your needs)?
