Nursefriendly Entrepreneur Registration Form******************************** In general, the more detailed your responses, the better. Your Name, Degrees Licenses (Nursing and non-nursing degrees/licenses are fine to list): Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Registered Nurse x 30 years, with a focus on ER/Trauma. I have worked in a variety of roles, including ER Manager, Stroke Program Manager, Trauma Coordinator, and Director of Education. I just published my first book (!) on my nursing career (“Never Again”). It is a compilation of stories of patients I’ve cared for during my career. All true stories! Never Again! From horror to humor, my life as a nurse [NOOK Book] on Barnes, Noble.
What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? My parents told me I had decided by age 6 that I wanted to be a nurse. I love helping people, and seeing the amazing effects that a caring and compassionate nurse can make in a person’s life. What is your experience and background in Nursing? . My nursing career has been mostly focused on ER and Trauma. I have also worked as a Legal Consultant for lawyers. A few years ago, I shifted focus on the diabetic population, especially within the Emergency Department, and eventually obtained my CDE. About 5 years ago, I started doing stand-up comedy, in my nursing uniform! It was well received and I now do professional/corporate stand-up comedy. This new career move has allowed me to give keynote addresses, national conference presentations, and a variety of medical fundraisers. In 2012, I began hosting a weekly internet based health and humor radio show. The Health and Humor Hour, Wednesday @ 730pm EST on www.HealthInfoRadio.com Would you recommend Nursing as a career? I highly recommend nursing as a career. I personal can’t think of any other “career” that interests me as much as nursing. Having my nursing license has given autonomy, independence, unlimited job opportunities, and a lifetime of memories. Your Business Name (if applicable): www.MaureenSullivanRN.com E-mail Address: Maureen@MaureenSullivanRN.com Social Media Twitter: https://twitter.com/MaureenSRN Linkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/maureen-sullivan/50/9b1/552 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/maureen.sullivan.1441 Pinterest (Pedagogy Medical), http://pinterest.com/pin/553731716653638142/ Type of business categories would you would like to be listed (no maximum, we make up new categories frequently for registrants): Author, Writer, Legal Nurse Consultant, Stand Up Comedian, Diabetes Education Keywords, Phrases that describe your business, experience, services: The more you list the better. Author, Writer, Entertainer, Diabetes Education, Emergency Department, Lecturer, Educator How did you hear about the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Twitter! The year were you first licensed as a nurse? 1981 ? What school(s) of nursing did you attend? St Mary of Nazareth Hospital School of Nursing Professional organizations you have belonged to: Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), American Heart Association (AHA), American Diabetes Association (ADA) , American Association of Diabetic Educators (AADE) How many times have you changed employers in your career? I have changed employers numerous times in my career. I believe that nursing, with its unlimited opportunities, offers a variety of career choices. Nurses, in my opinion, should never feel locked into a career path that no longer interest them. Nursing offers job security, and the ability to network, travel, and explore so many different areas. What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Nurses all possess great organizational skills, documentation skills, as well as leadership and delegation skills. Such skills position nurses for business ownership. Nurses also are trusted by the general population, have mastered public relations, and treat the public with respect. Again, all qualities for a business to become successful! Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: My biggest fear is that nursing will not continue to attract “the next generation”. Reports say that the current generation is seeking jobs with more autonomy, flexibility, and better pay. Nursing requires dedication, and often involves odd shifts, heavy workloads, and less than optimal pay scales. I hope and pray the profession realizes the future is now, and continues to address the issues and work on them in the interest of future healthcare. Continuing Education Courses Authored by Maureen:

Stroke: An Introduction, Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE, Pedagogy Medical:"An online continuing education course for nurses, medical health care professionals, and other interested individuals.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Few conditions can occur as rapidly and with as devastating consequences as stroke. Data from the American Stroke Association (ASA) indicate that over 700,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke each year. Immediate emergency treatment is critical to surviving a stroke with the least amount of damage to the brain and the ability to function. Every stroke or transient ischemic attack must be treated as a life-threatening emergency. Thus, it is important that all healthcare providers be educated on the early identification of stroke symptoms, emergency care options, and prevention of recurrent stroke."
