Thirty seniors from New York City high schools have been selected to participate in the nursing camp. The students have expressed an interest in a nursing career. "We hope that at least 80 percent of the participants will declare a major in nursing or a health field when they enter college," explained BMCC President Antonio Pérez. Jones has sickle cell anemia, a disease that sometimes separated her from other children growing up.
Sickle cell anemia is a blood disease marked by “c” shaped blood cells. Normal blood cells are shaped like disks. The nursing camp will be held from July 13 -17. The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp is open to students entering or completing the 8th or 9th grade during the 2009 school year. The focus of the camp is to learn about nursing as a career.
